Medicare Update: Durable Medical Equipment

You may have heard that Congress changed the way that Medicare determines how much it pays for certain durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) and who can furnish these items. Starting in July 2008, you’ll begin to see the effect of a new Competitive Bidding Program in certain areas of the country. Here’s what you need to know about this new program.

Teacher disabled in car accident keeps job, teaches from home

Special education teacher Barb Hartseil was in a serious car accident in late January, and her five students really needed to know she was OK after a nearly two-month absence. Modern technology allayed their fears, with students and teacher using video-conferencing software to see and hear each other.

Brokeback homeless?

Victoria Hollingsworth, a newscaster in the UK, broke her back in a car accident three years ago. During her post-operative care, she learned that many people injured in accidents become homeless due to a lack of insurance funding to modify their existing homes. Victoria is making an effort to raise public awareness regarding the unspoken consequences of becoming disabled in the UK.

Ride a cow, save a ligament

How now brown cow? That’s the question for Wilhelmina, an 8 year old dairy cow who sustained an injury to her cruciate ligament so severe, it would have normally been the end of her. Wilhelmina’s owners though, were willing to allow doctors from Kansas State University to attempt a radical procedure to completely replace her ligament with a fully synthetic material called “Wildcat Power Cord”.
